I was introduced to DISC Personality Test over 25 years ago as part of my doctoral studies. It was such a positive experience that I became a DISC Consultant to share it with others. I have administered the DISC Assessment to thousands as a university professor, leadership coach and consultant. I believe in the DISC Profile and highly recommend it to others.

DISC Profile is one of the best tools available to help you understand yourself, enhance good relationships, improve strained relationships, build teams, increase work effectiveness, and refine leadership skills. It is simple, understandable, and non-technical, yet as accurate as many of the more complex learning instruments. I use it confidently in academic settings and scores of other contexts with individuals, groups, and large organizations. It is a joy to present the DISC Personality Test, and even more exciting to interact with people as they gain better understanding of themselves and others. I am not alone, as over 40 million people worldwide have used DISC Profile for many of its beneficial purposes. It is perhaps the most widely used instrument of its kind.

If it helps you to know a little about me professionally, I am a seminary professor teaching leadership and communication on both masters and doctoral levels, and a consultant with churches and non-profit organizations. For more than a decade before my current role, I was a university professor in the fields of religion, leadership and business communication. Prior to that, I was a minister for twenty years. I graduated from Lipscomb University, received a masters degree at Harding University, and completed a doctorate at Abilene Christian University. My wife and I have been married for over 30 years, and we have two grown daughters.

What Does "DISC" Mean?

The extensive research on DISC Profile highlights four basic behavioral preferences and describes how these shape what we contribute to and need from our relationships. The four DISC personality styles are...

DISC Test consists of 24 questions that measure where a person appears on the high-average-low scale for each of these styles.

Referring to the DISC Profile as a test or quiz does not mean one passes or fails, as there are no right or wrong styles. It is a "test" in that it accurately assesses one's style. It is a "quiz" in that it is simple and takes less than 20 minutes to complete.

Once you complete the DISC Personality Test, you are not pegged or fixed into a particular type. DISC Profile simply describes your current typical pattern, explains the most common behaviors associated with that pattern, increases understanding of those with different orientations, and provides a basis for adjustments and changes that may improve relationships.

DISC Profile Personalities, Part 1: D - Dominant

In the DISC Personality Test, the first letter in the acronym is "D" for "Dominant" tendencies. The list below describes the characterstics of those who score high "D."

Basic description - DOMINANT, Demanding, Driving, Determined, Decisive, Doers

Ancient Greek (Hippocrates) – “Choleric”

Wilson Social Style – Driver

Celebrity "D" Personalities - Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Bill O'Reilly, Sarah Palin

Emphasis - Shape the environment by overcoming opposition to achieve results

Strengths - Get immediate results, cause action, embrace difficulties

Blind spots under pressure - Pushy, impatient, domineering, aggressive, tough, harsh

Outgoing - Initiates action, expresses opinion, leads, "mover and shaker"

Achievement-Oriented - Takes on new challenges, overcomes obstacles, tries new things

Conflict - Faces it head on (and sometimes creates it) through confrontation, wants to resolve quickly and move on

Fast-paced - Gets things done quickly and efficiently

Facts over feelings - Objectively sees the logic of a situation but may be blind to others' feelings

Change - Prefers the new and untried over status quo, imaginary, visionary, creative

Individual over group - "Believe me, I can get this done!"

DISC Profile Personalities, Part 2: I - Influencing

The second letter in the DISC Personality Test is "I" for the "Influencing" orientation. Here are the tendencies of those with strong "I" tendencies.

Emphasis - Shape the environment by influencing or persuading others

Strengths - Contacting people, making favorable impressions, articulate expressions

Blind spots under pressure - Disorganized, undisciplined, manipulative, excitable, reactive, vain

Outgoing - Likes to be out front, wins confidence and support of others

People-Oriented - Looks for ways to be with friends and make more friends

Conflict - Disklikes it but tries to overcome it through the power of persuasion and positive, winsome interaction

Fast-paced - Creates positive, energetic and enjoyable circumstances

Feelings over facts - Tries to engender better feelings, may compromise to maintain popularity and good will

Change - New possibilities are better than the old ways, easily drawn to current trends
